How to design a World Chorus OC! (Original Character!)
So, if you’re reading this, it’s likely you want to learn how to draw an original character inspired by those from World Chorus! Well, I’ve created quite a few in my time, so here’s some advice I’d give to those of you who want to make your own little members of this choir and band!
Preliminary steps
Since I consider World Chorus a big choir and band conducted by the conductor, or as I’ve named him, Jules, I try to assign every character I create an instrument or some sort of function within the overall group.
It’s also important to consider the nationality and clothing style of each of your characters, as fundamentally World Chorus is tied to it’s a small world, which celebrates diversity. So, here’s some of my original characters and how I designed them!
Some art of Jules, along with some characters I’ve designed for his band, based on the silhouettes that appeared around him and the choir outfits. It’s important to consider a diverse range of races and instruments for your characters!
To start, you already know of Tito, Juli and Henry, alongside their little Italian friend. These characters are based on 3 unknown silhouettes which can be found in old, lost footage from the ride.
To make them distinct, I’ve made both Tito and the little gondolier on the screen Italian, and both of them sail people together through Venice when they meet up. He’s shy but also very empathetic, treating his friends warmly and giving them a listening ear when they need it. His design includes vitiligo!
Juli, or Juliette, is a fashion designer who loves making her own clothes. She’s French and adores all sorts of clothes, being very particular about her designs when she’s sewing them, and meticulous with jewels and trims. She designed the choir outfits that the group wears when they perform!
Finally, Harry is the older brother of Victoria, the little girl in green who feeds her cat. He’s from England just like her, and they have similar uniforms for visual coherence. Out of this trio, he’s the voice of reason and keeps the others out of trouble, especially Juli, and loves singing and theatre, so he’s close with Lorenzo. He can be quite formal and polite but never looks down on anyone, never judging and instead trying to see the best in them.
The little girl on the far right is twins with the boy in green, as I made his design first before realizing the original attraction had a girl instead. So, twins! He lives in Germany, she lives in France, and they’re pen pals!
I also invented a design for Daphne since her design is lost, but I based it on the few frames we have of her! She’s a cute little dancer!
This is one of my most recent designs, since I’m learning how to draw World Chorus kids on Procreate! This is Fiyero, inspired by the matador that I learned about from Chris Bailey! He’s an angry little fella, but he plays the castanets, when he’s not waiting for his sleepy bull friend!
Now onto some more original designs, based on my own imagination rather than concepts that already existed!
These sketches were based on a dream I had last year, depicting old World Chorus concept art and characters (which don’t exist) So I made some OCs!
Dominic first design, similar to his current one
This is Dominic, a little Cuban boy who loves to travel! He’s unique since he can move in and out of the Small World Small Talk boxes, along with my OCs Celine, Harold and Palila! He’s a sweet and cheerful boy who enjoys learning about new culture and chatting to his friends over the phone!
A recent Dominic doodle :)
Celine is a Canadian girl who speaks both French and English, and she loves anything and everything to do with flowers! She’s a pen pal of Charlotte, Miguel’s friend who he telephones, and she loves to sing and hear all of Dominic’s stories about his travels!
Palila is a little Polynesian girl who loves to dance, being one of the most energetic in the entire World Chorus, and especially out of her group (colloquially, the ‘CGI gang’). She’s a fun and kind girl who is passionate about the ocean and protecting all the creatures of the world, so she’s an environmentalist and enjoys doing beach cleanups with the others when she’s not using her devices to communicate with them!
Side note: I dreamt about a Hawaiian World Chorus girl and a small part of me is wondering if she actually existed since she was very, very vivid!
Harold is the last of the CGI gang, and he’s an English little boy who likes to dance, so he and Palila get along pretty well! He’s the youngest of their group and lives in Ireland, away from his big brother Mark (one of the choir kids), but he still enjoys talking to him from time to time! Harold looks up to the other World Chorus kids and wants to be like them, and he was the first to discover they could leave their CGI boxes and turn into little dolls just like the rest of the group! He’s got a good heart but can be mischievous!
Last but not least, I like to imagine Alexandra has a big (literally) sister in the form of the Russian Electrical Parade Doll, an old auctioned doll who I’ve named Polina. Polina is part of my group Lumina (found on ArtFight in my links) and she plays the balalaika, and though she’s not quite as sassy as little Alex, she can get a bit snarky if you irritate her!
